Dentist Approved Thanksgiving Foods

You probably will not be thinking of your dentist too often during the long Thanksgiving weekend. However, you need to be aware of what you are eating and how it could potentially affect your oral health. Fortunately, there are plenty of things you can eat that actually have a positive effect on your teeth and gums.

Turkey

You probably do not need to be told twice to enjoy turkey for the holiday, but here are some extra reasons to enjoy it. Turkey is a great form of lean protein, and it also contains the following nutrients.

  • Calcium
  • Potassium
  • Phosphorous
  • Vitamin B
  • Vitamin D

All these work together to reduce your likelihood of developing cavities and periodontal disease.

Cheese and Crackers

If you are going to snack on something throughout the Thanksgiving weekend, then make it cheese and crackers. Cheese is great for reducing the overall pH value in your mouth, and it increases saliva production, which is a key component in fighting harmful bacteria. Make sure you get whole grain crackers, which can reduce the risk of gum disease.

Sweet Potatoes

Your dentist will recommend that if you eat sweet potatoes for the holidays, you avoid drenching them in marshmallows or maple syrup. If you do that, then the healthier aspects of the dish are moot. Sweet potatoes are an excellent source of manganese, magnesium, potassium and calcium.

Pumpkin Pie

You can still have pie after your meal, but make sure you are getting the sugar-free variety. Healthier pumpkin pie will contain potassium, vitamin A and vitamin C. You can still have some pie for the holidays without worrying about it exacerbating the development of cavities.

You can still have a fun, delicious Thanksgiving without giving your dentist nightmares during your next visit. While a single holiday may not seem like it would do too much harm, you always need to be thinking of your oral structures’ well-being. All these foods are delicious and healthy, so you do not even have to compromise.
